Nourish with Intention: Why Small Changes Matter More Than You Think

When I started writing this post, I thought about how the title reminded me of investing, and then how much of life is spent investing in some capacity–money, time, hobbies, effort, character-building, etc. We are always investing into something–either something helpful or hurtful. It might make you stop and think.

In fact, I hope this post makes you stop and think…

What am I investing in?

Don’t want to answer the question? I feel that. Nowadays, we feel pressure, and perhaps, excitement to be as productive as possible with every ounce of our lives. I don’t know about you but I want everything I do, think, and am to be useful and considered good. I want to be of high character. I want to use my money wisely. I want to be a patient mother. I want to be a thoughtful friend. I want to be skilled at several hobbies or jobs. I want to spend time with my kids. I want to continually learn. I want the laundry to be done and put away, for once and for all (Can I get an AMEN?). I want to be healthy. I want to look good.

To achieve all these things, I have to invest my time, money, and effort in them. I have to be very intentional in every area of life. However, I am forgetting a huge piece of this puzzle… A humbling piece of this puzzle.

I am finite.

How do we fix this? Well, news flash… we can’t. BUT, we can start with small changes that grow into who we are, which ultimately can change who we are. Now I am talking specifically about diet.

When we make small changes to our diet, we begin a process of changing our brain to become more like the change we are making. For instance, when we cut out sugar for two weeks, we know, research tells us, that the sensitivity of our taste buds enhances and we will crave sweets less and foods like raw fruit will taste much sweeter to us.

A study involving 29 participants on a low-sugar diet for one month found a 62% reduction in cravings for sweets within just two weeks. By avoiding sugar, the body stabilizes blood sugar levels, leading to a sense of physical and emotional balance and reducing dependency on sugar.

I am not a proponent of all or nothing diet changes. They aren’t sustainable unless it’s maybe one change, like “I won’t eat peach rings anymore”, but if you say, “I’m not eating added sugar anymore”, then you are just lying to yourself (even with the best intentions… I’m not shaming the goal).

In order to become a healthier version of yourself, you must start small. Over time, it will result in big gains. It might even lead to more motivation for other changes you want to make in other areas of your life.

When I say “start small”, I’m talking about cutting portions slightly or foregoing the whip topping on the latte. These small changes can change the way your brain works and therefore lead you to a healthier mindset regarding food choices. I believe one of the easiest ways to make dietary changes, and honestly the best way to good nutrition, is finding ways you can incorporate as many fruits and vegetables as you can into each day.

When you incorporate as many fruits and vegetables as you can into your daily nutrition, this is what happens:

  • More nutrients and more diversity of nutrients in your body
  • More chronic disease protection–cancer, diabetes, hypertension, liver disease, etc.
  • Lower caloric intake
  • Possible weight loss (I’m not making any promises, but it would make sense that weight loss would follow)
  • Feeling overall better
  • Mood improvements– Have you ever heard of the gut brain connection?? Fruits and vegetables feed those good bacteria in your gut and your gut is where the majority of your serotonin is produced. Fascinating!
  • Bowel regularity
  • Improved skin and nails

… the list could go on.
